It is a beautiful day for our make up game with Pittsburgh today in Boston. Pitching for the Sox today is Eduardo Rodriguez looking for his first win. Red Sox looking to bounce back from a disastrous spanking last night at the hands of the Orioles. The wind will definitely be a factor but temps are tolerable. Day games can be challenging in Boston especially in the later innings of a morning start as the shadows fall between home and the pitchers mound. Picking up fly balls is a nightmare in this wind.
E-Rod having his typical challenges getting out of the first inning but settling down with some seriously good stuff today. Fastball in the mid 90’s, lots of movement on the ball and some very generous calls to get him out of some jams. After Steven Wright’s implosion yesterday, everyone is holding their breath hoping Rodriguez makes it at least into the 7th inning which he did. When E-Rod develops better control and consistency, the Orioles are going to regret their decision to cast him off to another team in the AL East. In the meantime, he will tease and frustrate like he did today.
I know it is early in the season but I was really expecting more runs from this line-up. Life without David Ortiz is proving to be more challenging than we thought it would be. Mookie Betts is not yet hitting his weight and the hits just aren’t coming with men in scoring position. Other than the back –to-back doubles in the 2nd inning, today has been no exception…until the 8th when our patience is rewarded. A little wild streak by Pittsburg and some timely hitting from Hanley Ramirez and we are tied giving us a new ballgame. Close play at the plate correctly reverses Mookie Betts being called safe at the plate. X-man just knocked in Hanley and now it’s a save situation.
It is always a heart thumping ninth with Kimbrell. Somewhere out there is a lights out closer with Red Sox written all over him…He can’t get here soon enough. Today, we’ll have to settle for Christian Vasquez heroics, throwing out the game tying run at second to help stave off a late inning rally. It is hard to believe he is just getting back from Tommy John surgery.
It’s a wrap. Red Sox rally for the win.
